Blinds Design Advice
Recess Size Blind or Exact (non-recessed) Size Blind?
Each wood blind is supplied with universal fixing brackets. These brackets allow you to install your blind in a number of different ways. You can choose to fix the mounting brackets.
- Into the wall on the left and right – inside of the recess
- Up into the ceiling
- Directly onto a wall.
However before deciding where to fix your blind, it is best is to check out our comprehensive measuring guides. These guides have been provided to give you a complete overview of how the blinds should fit in order to give you the best cover on your window as well as ensuring that your blind will fit and function correctly within a number of different window designs.
As a rule it is best to be guided by the layout on your window. Where you have a reveal or recess we generally recommend that you fit your blind within it. This gives a very neat finish inside the room and also shows the blind well from the exterior of the property.
There are however some occasions when it may be better to mount a blind outside of the recess. For example if your blind is going in front of a door it may be better to mount the blind higher up on the wall outside of the recess. Then when the blind slats are raised there will be no stack of slats to impede entry through the door. Another occasion when you may wish to mount outside of a recess is when windows are inward opening or are a tilt and turn design. By fitting outside the recess you will ensure nothing restricts the window moving inwards.
If you have an upstand or a dado rail inside a recess, always measure between these points. This will ensure the blind will lower and raise & fit between the narrowest points of the recess. You can always request a slightly wider pelmet to fit tight from wall to wall within the recess walls.
Sash and casement windows normally need an outside mount .The blind fixes directly to the window wood frame surround. Remember to request “end returns” on your blind pelmet if you would like the pelmet to wrap around the blind box on all 3 sides. See attached illustration.

If you need to install one or more blinds next to each other, we can supply a single pelmet to cover all the blinds. This gives a nice uniform finish to the installation.
