Shutters Shutters Design Advice

Indoor Shutter Design Advice

Plantation Shutters - Top Design Tips

We have provided these pages of shutter design advice to help our customers plan out the best possible solution for their house shutter designs. The California Shutter and Blind Co. pride ourselves in providing exquisite and well crafted indoor shutters and we want you to find the best possible designs which will suit your individual house and colour schemes.

We often get asked, "can you fit wooden shutters on pvu windows" and the simple answer is YES you can fit shutters onto PVC or double glazed windows. You can read our measuring guides for shutters which accompany these design pages.

Opening your shutter panels?

Think about how you will use your shutters. Fewer panels work best if you leave the panels closed over (and tilt the slats open) while small panels can concertina onto each other, thus making panel opening easier and less intrusive.

Panels all the way?

Wanting privacy and light? Tier on tier shutters allow you to leave the panels closed, but slats tilted on the bottom half and the top panels open. Or, just have cafe style shutters covering the lower section of your window only.

Inside or Outside?

For recessed windows, you can mount your plantation shutters inside the recess, tight to the window, or at the very front of the recess flush with the internal wall.

Panel quantity.

Match the number of shutter panels to the number of window sections on your windows.

Think colour.

Dark stains and strong painted coloured shutters can look stunning but be drain colour from the room if not used correctly to tie in with room decor and furniture.

Which white?

The California Shutter Co offers a comprehensive range of standard white paints. Don’t get too focussed on finding the perfect white to match your decor. Being directly adjacent to the light from your windows, the exact colour of your shutters will appear different depending on the weather outside and shadows cast on the panels.

Wood these shutters look best?

We offer shutters made from quality hardwoods, yellow poplar and elm. Poplar wood shutters have a more subtle, softer wood grain while elm shutters, very similar to oak, have a more dramatic sweeping, deep grain.

Slat sophistication.

Shutters are made with a range of different slat sizes. Smaller 47mm shutter slats can look great on smaller windows while 89mm shutters give a more modern look.

To rod or not to rod.

Push rods (the central shutter slat tilt bar) give a more traditional look to your shutters while our concealed open sky system enables you to tilt the slats with the touch of just one slat.
