Shutter Design Advice

Rule 8 Slat sophistication

Shutters are made with a range of different slat sizes. Smaller 47mm shutter slats can look great on smaller windows whilst 89mm shutters give a more modern look.

In all, The California Shutter Company offers customers the choice of 4 different slat sizes for your shutters. You can choose plantation shutters with 47mm, 64mm, 89mm or bold 114mm slats. As with all design options you choose, slat size is again a personal choice and there are no right or wrongs. Choosing which size of slat is best suited to your shutters is ultimately down to which size you think best suits your window and the design and interior style of your house.

The most popular choice of slats for our shutters is the 64mm slat or 2 ˝". Most customers find this gives a clear look of the plantation shutters, whilst not being too dominant (which in the wrong setting, the 89mm slat can be). However, if you are looking for a more contemporary look for your room the 89mm slat can give a slicker, less busy look to your window.

slat size shutter options

All shutters that we manufacture have an overlap of 25mm. This means that when the slats are closed down they have a good amount of overlap stopping light flooding between the shutter slats. Also, the benefit is that when the panels are closed over, and you tilt the slats at a slight angle for privacy, the overlap of the slats makes it impossible for passers by to see ‘up and over' the slats therefore giving you great privacy. You still have the benefit of light coming into the room without compromising privacy.
