Shutter Design Advice

Rule 6 - Which white?

shutter whites

The California Shutter Co offers a comprehensive range of standard white paints. Don’t get too focused on finding the perfect white to match your decor. Being directly adjacent to the light from your windows, the exact colour of your shutters will appear different depending on the weather outside and shadows cast on the panels...

We offer our shutters in a wide range of different paint finishes and whilst we do offer the option of having a custom colour for your shutters, the vast majority of California shutter customers opt for a paint finish from our standard range. As most customers woodwork is painted a shade of white, our shutter colour range has been selected to reflect this and our range of whites, creams and off whites are the shutter colours of choice.

However, when looking for the right colour, our advice is not to become too hung up on choosing what you consider to be exactly the right shade of white. We aim to offer the widest possible choice of colour to our customers and as such you can order the shutters in different shades of white. The differences however can be very, very small when you actually see the shutters installed.

Another factor is that the finish on your shutters will be different to that on your window framing and surrounding woodwork. The finish on our shutters is superb, with every part of the product subject to a large amount of hand finishing and craftsmanship. The main factor in the shutter painting and staining process is that the shutters are sprayed several times with paint or stain and are hand rubbed down (denibbed) to ensure the smoothest possible finish on the wooden shutters. As a result of this, you will not see the same brush type marks on the wood shutters as you would see on the window frames themselves or on other woodwork that you are likely to have in your room.

Whichever shade of white painted shutters you opt for, the effect of the sun and amount of light outside has a huge impact on the appearance of them. Depending on the time of day, if it’s raining outside or if it’s bright sunshine, the shadows cast on your shutter slats can give the appearance of the shutters looking a slightly different shade.

Whichever option you choose, all shutters are finished in high quality polyurethane based paints and are coated with a UV protective lacquer to ensure they are protected from the UV effects of the sun. Keep your shutters clean and irrespective which shade of white you choose for your shutters, they will fantastic for years to come!
