How to Measure for Curved Bay Window Shutters

tip for measuring curved bay windows for shutters

Before you start you will need:

  • A good quality steel tape measure
  • A spirit level
  • Paper and pen

How to Measure for a Curved Bay Window

  1. Each window in the bay gets its own individual frame. The panel or panels are hinged inside each frame.
  2. Due to the angle / curve of the bay it is ALWAYS necessary for you to print out the correct paper frame templates and position them on the sill as shown in our illustration and photo guide.
  3. You must first decide on the slat size you require. Then check for window handles which may restrict the slats tilting. Speak to our team for full assistance on frame selection. Our Team can advise on midrails and stiles which can possibly cover handles which allows you to use a smaller depth of frame.
  4. When the correct frame required has been established print out and position as shown. Then measure each width as per the RED line. NOTE: Ensure frames will not be fitted directly in front of window handles .If unsure send our team a photo showing where you have positioned them.
  5. When measuring for the drop it is important that all frames are ordered to the same height for each window. This ensures that all panels have equal number of slats and that shutters have equal top and bottom rails.
  6. The width of the frame that you will position is 35mm and the depth of this frame (how far the frame comes from the window into the room) is either 57mm or 67mm, 85mm or 97mm The depth you choose depends on the slat size you go for and if there are large handles on the window that you need to clear.
  7. If you want to include a midrail in the panels, measure up from the sill to the mid point on the window where you want the rail centered. Again, this should be the same measurement on all windows in the bay. If there is a divide or rail on the actual window it is always best to mirror this location on the shutter panels. This is normally in the middle or 3/4 way up the window.
  8. Use a steel tape measure and always measure in a couple of places on every window to ensure it is square. If the window is not square always choose the smallest measurement it needs to be.
