Shutter Measuring Guide for Inside Mount Windows

This shutter measuring guide will help you clearly see where you should measure. We also advise you to also download our Shutter template cut outs.
Our shutters are supplied with a custom built frame. To inside mount the frame you need a recess area or a reveal on the window. If you have a recess area deep enough to accommodate our frames then you can fit your shutters as an inside mount. The information below explains which frame would be most suitable.
Use a steel tape measure
- Measure inside recess from left side to right side. Take the width at 3 different locations across the window and give us the SMALLEST width.
- Measure inside recess from top to bottom. Take the height at 3 different locations along the window and give us the SMALLEST drop.
- Supply us with tight measurements and we will make a small deduction to allow the frame to fit easily inside the recess.
- Shutter panels then hinge inside this frame.

We offer a “Z” frame for inside mount shutters installed to the front of the recess. The molded “Z” frame adds a beautiful finished look to the shutters.
The benefit of the Z frame is that its molded edge covers the visible gap between the recess wall and the inside of the frame. This is a good option for customers who wish to open their shutter panels back 180 degrees to sit against the interior wall. Please see sketch below for actual size of Z frame.
How to Measure an Inside Mount

The green lines above show where your shutter frames will be mounted. You need to measure as indicated by the black arrows. Remember – the dimension you give to us includes the frame itself. If ordering full height panels with a mid rail please measure to the blue line to ensure the mid point of the mid rail is at the mid point of the window transom.
If ordering café style or tier on tier shutters measure to the red line (the lower panels will then cover the window transom). To measure please refer to instructions at the beginning of this section and use the templates supplied. Below is an example of how full height shutters with a mid rail would look when installed.
Checking for Obstructions

Before measuring, look for any obstructions on the window. You need to make sure that you avoid the possibility of the slats tilting open and hitting any obstacles such as handles or phone junction box.
We advise that phone points, if they sit in the way of the shutter frame, should be moved. This is generally the case with 3 section Victorian sash windows. However for handles, especially on UPVC windows, it is not easy to change these and you therefore need to ensure you measure correctly to accommodate the handles.
- Measure how far into the room the handles protrude.
- Depending on the slat size you choose check if you will have enough clearance or if you need to pull the frame forward.
- You can order a deeper frame if you choose. For example a 4032 (67mm deep) frame for a 47mm slat. We can also custom make a non standard depth frame for additional cost.
