Before you start you will need:

• A good quality steel tape measure
• A spirit level
• Paper and pen

Our shutters are supplied with a custom built frame. OUTSIDE MOUNT refers to the direction that the fixing holes are predrilled in the shutter frame. Frames supplied with OUTSIDE mount fixing holes will attach directly to the window frame or the wall surround. The most typical type of window having outside mounted shutters would be a sash window.

USE A STEEL TAPE MEASURE

Measure from left to right across the window remembering to include the correct amount of space for your chosen frame to fit. All of our L frames require 35mm on left and right side plus 35mm on top and bottom of window. As most shutter frames will sit on the window sill you will generally need to measure the window height from sill to top of window remembering to add 35mm for the shutter frame at the top. To confirm, the total width and drop that you convey to us will include the area on the window where the shutter frame will be mounted.

If you choose our Modern Deco frame you will need to add 67mm of space for this frame to mount to window or surround. Study our illustration below for clarification.

Flat L frame... Suitable for a slat size of 47mm or 64mm

Modern Deco Frame ... suitable for solid panels and 47mm slats .This frame can be used with bigger slats but only if the correct clearance space is available in the recess behind shutters (it may be necessary to use this frame on inward opening door / window, the deco frame will mount outside of the recess on the wall to allow window to operate inwards)

When taking your measurements be sure to include a 67mm space on all sides of window that you require the frame. This space is where your shutter frame will mount.

1. Measure the width and drop of window as per the RED lines. Remember to add at least 35 mm (for L frames only) of flat space on all sides of the window. This is where your shutter frame will mount. Most frames will sit on the sill so you will generally need to measure the window height from sill to top of window remembering to include 35mm for the shutter frame at the top. To confirm, the size you supply to us should be fully inclusive of any frame sides you require. We do not add on the frame
2. For a midrail position, measure from the bottom up to the GREEN line. We will centre our dividing midrail at this point.
3. For Cafe (half height) or tier on tier (double hung) shutters, measure from the bottom up to the BLUE line for the finish height of the lower panel.

NOTE: Inserting a midrail in a panel can offer flexibility on how you tilt the slats. A midrail can cover a handle or rail on your window or door. A midrail will offer greater strength and stability to taller shutter panels.

Before measuring, look for any obstructions on the window. You need to make sure that you avoid the possibility of the slats tilting open and hitting any obstacles such as handles or phone junction box.

We advise that phone points, if they sit in the way of the shutter frame, should be moved. This is generally the case with 3 section Victorian sash windows. However for handles, especially on UPVC windows, it is not easy to change these and you therefore need to ensure you measure correctly to accommodate the handles.

• Measure how far into the room the handles protrude.
• Depending on the slat size you choose check if you will have enough clearance or if you need to pull the frame forward.
• You can order a deeper frame if you choose. For example a 4032 (67mm deep) frame for a 47mm slat. We can also custom make a non standard depth frame for additional cost.
